Smudge Pot History…
Smudge Pots were very important in our Yakima Valley, where the temperature can drop unexpectedly during early spring, threatening fruit crops. The Smudge Pots would emit smoke as they burned oil, which helped to warm the air near the plants and create a protective layer.
Orchard Smudge Pots are now replaced by modern, cleaner, and more efficient methods. Wind machines (to mix air), sprinklers (for evaporative cooling), helicopters (for air mixing), and hot-air cannons are common now. That leaves all those Smudge Pots waiting for me to give them new life!
Giving Smudge Pots New Life…
By turning those Smudge Pots into lanterns, I give them a new purpose, but also preserve a bit of local history in a functional way.
I go through each Pot repurposed and painstakingly clean of all the fuel and dirt. I use a plasma cutter to burn a design into the metal. My lantern designs are usually inspired by Hieroglyphics and free-hand is my favorite method. However, I also offer custom design options for special areas and locations.

The above lit up smudge pot lanterns use (plug-in) electric LED light strings with a photo eye that turns them on at night and off during the day. Simply tape over the photo eye if daytime lighting is desired, .
Lanterns can be painted in a variety of colors to match your style or clear-coated to highlight the natural tones. Lanterns are perfect for both indoor and outdoor settings, adding a warm, ambient glow to any space.
Each Smudge pot weighs about 30 pounds, is about 3.5 feet in height and 2 feet wide at the widest point. Contact me for additional information. All are available for $400 each (not including shipping).
