Mike Hiler, Cups, Bowls, Jars & Ollas

Porcelain Cups & Bowls are my primary expressive ceramic forms and I approach those forms, individually as sculpture. My goal is to produce a unique form, which honors the tactile response to fired clay and resonates with others.

While attending the Institute of Allende in San Miguel, Mexico I studied native clays and tableware such as my Jars & Ollas.  There I learned to appreciate native earthenware ceramic forms and traditions.

Some cups are more experimental than others, many are on a spectrum of stylistic impression, but I try to present all finished cups as “Ready for your use and enjoyment.” Here are a variety of my cups, all of which have found homes…

My functional ceramic forms are microwave and dishwasher safe and I do not use lead or other unfriendly chemicals in my clays or glazes. I never make two cups alike and generally create cups and bowls in sets.

Jars & Ollas…

I was introduced to earthenware jars while attending the Instituto Allende in San Miguel, MX. My method for forming these large containers, originally used to store water, is based on the ancient coil
