Long Arc Art

Lyn and Doug Lewis

Long Arc Art, Doug and Lyn Lewis

“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” MLK Jr

We have always appreciated art as a wonderful medium to communicate the breadth of human experience and emotion, how an artist’s work can move us to marvel at the beauty and wonder in our world, or challenge us with its brokenness, or encourage us to consider new perspectives. We are just beginning this art journey ourselves, enjoying working together and with others, and we hope, in some way, we can help to bend the long arc toward the beauty of peace, love and justice.

About the Artists

From Doug…
Growing up in an orchard at the foot of the Cascades hiking, running, camping, fishing, etc. gave me a sense of wonder and oneness with nature. Life has taught me to recognize that every living being has a story-a journey that makes us who we are. Our thoughtfulness and deep appreciation of our own and others’ journeys is essential in building and sustaining healthy relationships and communities.

Seeing a piece of interesting wood art is seeing a beautiful story. Its beauty is, in part, due to its captivating “flaws” as the tree grew through adverse weather conditions or survived pests, disease or some other damage. My hope is that when people see my or any artwork, they appreciate the story that is being revealed in it and grow in appreciation of this journey of life we all share.

From Lyn…
Nature’s complexity and artistry are what inspire me to create – whether it’s the pattern of a pinecone, the twists in a branch, or the imperfections wrought by adversity. I gather many of my art materials close to home- gourds grown in my garden, sagebrush from the shrub-steppe, pine needles for coiling. Combining these natural elements with pigments and encaustic medium results in a unique and varied blending of shape, color and texture. I enjoy experimenting with gourds, coiled sculptures and paintings to create something both interesting and beautiful.
