“You Go, Girl”
This is Jackie Mitchell, the second lady to play in professional league baseball. She was 17, a member of the Chattanooga AA Baseball team, the Lookouts. During an exhibition game with the Yanks in 1931, she consecutively struck out Babe Ruth (yes, the Babe) and Lou Gehrig. She signed a professional league contract, but it was torn up by
the baseball commissioner because “baseball was too strenuous and women were unfit to play it.” Jackie suddenly became an unprecedented example for women in sports. It was over 50 years before another woman played pro baseball. Women have since then gone into virtually all the so-called male sports but it took a few pioneers, a few giants, to finally break the mold and claim their places in a previously man’s world. You go, girl!
Maple, Redwood burl, quartz. The finish is satin lacquer buffed to lustre.
