“Salad Bowl & Utensils” 14x14x10”, birch bowl The peek-a-boo 3/8” sliver of lip bark identifies the genus for folks who like to know the species and don’t recognize the ‘blotches’. These patches inside and outside look like they’re painted right onto the wood and are seen in the lowermost part of the trunk that is subjected to great overhead weight and wind over the decades in somebody’s front yard. It’s supposed to look fragile/precious/elegant with its rounded baseless bottom but has a 35% flat that sits it on the counter firmly and without ‘tippyness’. 509–949-5873 E-Mail me!
“Mountain Ash #1” ~24x23x4 It’s a favorite of mine that had been stuck away safe and never put out for show. Don’t know why. Friend Jerry J got the wood to me from Tri-cities where the tree was still alive. It had a huge arbor, dwarfing any Mountain Ash in my memory banks. They’re those cute little trees with the big bunches of berries that turn orange in the winter. Anyways, it had a three branch crotch right at ground level and when I rough-turned it on the lathe, I could see swirling grain patterns flying off in every direction, quilting, and black defects, a visual treat. I feared it would crack and it did. But, I fixed the 2 big cracks with the ‘stitches’ I like making and epoxied the little ones, sanded to 600gr after a 6-month dry period, top-coated with wiping epoxy and polycoat, polished and waxed it to luster. It’s weighty like all ash, but it ‘feeeels’ just perfect. 509–949-5873 E-Mail me!
“Birch Party Bowl ”21 x 20 x 7”
This one came from almost a block away from home. It was a big 22” birch and it was dying from the local killer. EMERALD BIRCH BORER. The dead staubs were sticking straight up into the summer sky and the few green leaves wouldn’t last the hot summer. So, they cut it down . And I got the best pieces, enough to make a really big super-family sized salad bowl with matching utensils carved in a new handle design. They sit in the bowl perfect and are sized such that one scoop brings a full salad serving.
Finished in epoxy and urethane for durable long long every-day ise.
